In March 2026, the Northern Crops Institute (NCI) welcomed 19 participants from eight countries to Fargo, North Dakota, for its U.S. Ethanol Production and Procurement course. The weeklong program offered a comprehensive look at the U.S. ethanol industry, connecting global stakeholders to everything from corn production to fuel markets.
The course kicked off with introductions to U.S. agriculture and modern farming practices, followed by hands-on experiences including a visit to a North Dakota farm and a tour of an ethanol plant. Throughout the week, participants explored key topics like market development, policy, sustainability, and emerging technologies shaping the future of ethanol.
Interactive learning played a major role, with participants diving into supply chains, futures markets, and risk management. A highlight was the Commodity Trading Game, where attendees applied their knowledge in a fast-paced, real-world market simulation. Teams also collaborated on a case study, developing long-term strategies for a U.S.-based ethanol operation.
By combining classroom learning with real-world application, the course strengthened global understanding of U.S. ethanol and equipped participants with tools to navigate a rapidly evolving industry.
