Herbicide-resistant weeds like kochia, waterhemp, and palmer amaranth are causing problems for North Dakota farmers. To help combat this issue, free testing is now available through the North Dakota Herbicide Resistant Weed Survey.
How It Works
The North Dakota Corn Utilization Council (NDCUC) is inviting farmers and agronomists to collect and ship pigweed and kochia leaves from across the state. These samples go to the National Agricultural Genotyping Center (NAGC) for testing.
What They’re Testing For
The survey helps understand the genetics and distribution of resistant pigweeds and kochia to three types of herbicides:
- Group 2 herbicides
- Group 9 herbicides
- Group 14 herbicides
Free Collection Kits
Sample Collection Kits are available at no cost from local NDSU Extension offices on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Each kit includes:
- One prepaid U.S. Postal Service envelope
- One submission form
- Four small collection envelopes with blank labels
Quick Results
Testing happens at the National Agricultural Genotyping Center with results typically available within 7 days of arrival. Individual sample results remain confidential, and test results are sent directly to the email address provided on the submission form.
Current Progress
So far, the NAGC has received 51 kochia samples from 21 counties across North Dakota, showing strong participation in the program.
